CES 2024 Spotlight: How Technology Is Reshaping the Food Industry Ecosystem

January 24, 2024

Commemorating its 100th year, the Consumer Technology Association® (CTA) and organizer of CES 2024, brought together the brightest minds and most innovative technologies from nearly every industry. The record-breaking event spanned across 12 official venues, boasting 2.5 million net square feet of exhibit space and hosting over 250 conference sessions. As CES concluded, it left in its wake a trail of transformative trends poised to shape the future of technology in the coming months and years. The event embodied a prevailing theme of “Tech for Good,” encompassing a spectrum from AI and digital health to energy, food integrity, and sustainability.

One notable shift observed at CES 2024 was the tech industry’s commitment to developing new products that better satisfy the individual needs of today’s consumers. Tech pioneers are increasingly focused on personalization, simplicity, and user-friendly experiences, empowering consumers to tailor their tech interactions.

CES brought together groundbreaking technologies, and among them were exhibitors poised to revolutionize the food industry. We hope this post gives you a quick opportunity to explore the inventive solutions presented by these notable companies that not only captivated audiences but are also set to influence how we produce, deliver, and experience food:

Doosan Robotics’ Cocktail Robot: Mix Master Moodie

Doosan Robotics showcased the Mix Master Moodie, an imaginative bartending robotic arm powered by Doosan robots and Microsoft ChatGPT AI. This innovative system engages consumers by capturing their picture and, through facial recognition, determines their mood based on seven identified emotions. The robotic arm then recommends drinks aligned with the individual’s emotions, mimicking human-like movements.

According to Stephanie Callaway, senior marketing manager at Doosan, this technology goes beyond mixology. It can be seamlessly integrated into kitchen settings, addressing what she calls “the three D’s” – dull, dirty, and dangerous. The Doosan robotic arm offers an ideal solution for automating repetitive and potentially hazardous kitchen operations, providing a return on investment in approximately two years.

Ottonomy’s Delivery Robots: Ottobot Locker and Ottobot Brew

Tech startup Ottonomy continued to make waves with its shopping-cart-sized delivery robot, Ottobot, introducing new capabilities at CES 2024. The Ottobot Locker and Ottobot Brew “bring a new level of mobility and service to the beverage industry” and help businesses manage labor shortages.

Ottonomy partnered with Harbor Lockers and Cooler Key to enhance its beverage delivery system. Ottobot utilizes a CO2-driven draft system to dispense beer, cocktails, and cold coffee automatically. The latest model, Ottobot Yeti, features an automatic package dispenser, eliminating the need for human involvement. Arik Levy, general partner of Locker One Ventures, added the following in a statement: “Integrating first and last-mile options with autonomous robots is paving the way for the future of logistics.”

Walmart’s Tech-Based Commerce: Redefining the Shopping Experience

Walmart took a customer-centric approach to commerce, leveraging proprietary data, technology, and large language models, including Microsoft ChatGPT AI. The retail giant aims to deliver an intuitive, interconnected, and frictionless shopping experience that exceeds customer expectations.

By utilizing enhanced search experiences and personalized recommendations, Walmart’s tech-based commerce offers a curated list of items tailored to individual shoppers. This approach streamlines searches and user experiences, allowing customers to search by specific use cases rather than individual product categories such as “What is needed to host a Thanksgiving dinner or backyard barbecue?”

Nuvilab’s AI Food Scanner: A frontrunner in Food Waste Analysis and Nutritional Insights

Stepping up its game, Nuvilab revealed its latest iteration of its AI Food Scanner, now enriched with the groundbreaking Care Manager solution. Expanding on its prior capabilities, this innovative offering harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to monitor diets and effectively manage chronic diseases.

With the introduction of the AI Food Scanner 3.0, Nuvilab provides a comprehensive suite of solutions, including food waste management, personalized meal preferences, and individualized nutritional healthcare. The stage is set for Nuvilab to influence how we approach food analysis and nutritional well-being in the ever-evolving health and wellness landscape and healthcare foodservice sector.

Looking for more CES 2024 highlights? Here are a few additional revolutionary food tech applications that invaded the exhibit floor and opened the door for more automation in foodservice:

Greenswapp – introduced a technology-driven solution for restaurants to assess their menu’s carbon footprint. Employing life cycle analysis, Greenswapp tracks the environmental impact of a product from production through processing, packaging, and delivery. The objective is to empower restaurants with data for more informed and sustainable purchasing decisions.

ColdSnap – an innovative no-clean ice cream machine that whips up delectable ice cream in just two minutes. Users can choose from a variety of flavors, insert the pod into the machine, and enjoy a perfectly chilled treat within moments – an application that would serve well in QSR, college and university, recreational, and eatertainment environments.

SavorEat – a robot that utilizes proprietary 3D printing technology to produce meatless burgers. Beyond its technological ingenuity, the company offers an ordering system that allows guests to customize their burgers. From choosing the protein-to-fat ratio to specifying the patty size and preferred level of doneness, the result is a personalized burger ready in about six minutes, with the capacity to produce up to three burgers simultaneously. Applications extend to college campuses, convenience stores, business and industry, and even healthcare and athletic facilities.

YKE Desktop – prepares ramen in 90 seconds and is ideal for small spaces like convenience stores, offices, college dorms, and micro-markets. This semi-automated desktop version comes equipped with a fridge capable of storing up to 24 preconfigured bowls.
