Kraft Heinz Looks to Change Plastic Packaging
Many food and beverage companies are taking steps to significantly increase their sustainability initiatives and reduce their overall carbon footprint. On Monday, Kraft Heinz revealed that its Kraft Real Mayo and Miricle Whip bottles will be made with 100% recycled material – effective in U.S. markets in 2024. The company also aims to “reduce its virgin plastic use 20% by 2030 through incorporating more recycled content and plastic alternatives into its packaging” and “replace 15% of its PET rigid plastic packaging portfolio with postconsumer recycled content by 2025.” Read More.
Chips Ahoy! Finds A Sweet Spot With Young Shoppers
This 60-year-old brand is growing in sales at double-digit rates annually, and Chips Ahoy! has teens to thank. Food Dive reports that in 2022, Chips Ahoy! was named a Top 25 Gen Z brand. The cookie giant stopped investing in TV advertising and moved to where this new set of consumers spend their days. TikTok, Twitch, and online gaming channels took over their media spend. Waste Not, Wine Not
Research published in the international journal Cleaner Waste Systems found two compounds in the waste of commercially made wine called polyphenols and anthocyanins that offer essential health benefits and additional uses but were being tossed away. These compounds can now be found in supplements, ingredients, and food coloring and are said to protect against diseases like cancer and diabetes. Food scientists are encouraged that more discoveries like this will surface and influence other food and beverage companies to identify ingredients and compounds they are disposing of and rethink alternative uses for them.
