From the classics to new trends, experts weigh in on what’s hot in bakery today. First, as reported by TastingTable, Apothecary Chic, the “old-timey”, “potion-like bottles of liquid and dried herbs” are now finding their way onto cakes and pastries as decorative edible flowers.  A second notable trend is the expansion of sourdough into other formats. Are Walmart and Amazon Setting New Standards In Fulfillment?

To keep up with the ever-changing world of commerce Walmart and Amazon are making some fundamental changes to their fulfillment strategies. Walmart has just built its second “next generation” fulfillment center pack with high-tech equipment to achieve the perfect balance of people, technology, and machines. This will allow them to compete with the likes of Amazon by being able to reach 95% of the U.S. population with the next-day or two-day shipping accommodations. New Plant-Based Substitute Shows Promise In Outperforming Eggs

Startup Plantible Foods has introduced its first product called Rubi Whisk. This is a plant-based egg replacer made from highly functional proteins extracted from Lemna – a fast-growing aquatic plant. Martens Fekini, a co-founder of Plantible Foods, told AgFunderNews, “Rubi Whisk can replace eggs in everything from bread to cookies. It is nearly 100% soluble in water and forms stable emulsions when mixed with water and oil at high speeds, creating moister baked goods.” This product comes at a time when many food manufacturers are looking for egg substitutes due to ethical issues in egg production, allergen concerns, and environmental health protection. KFC Kicks Off July With A Bang

On or before July 3, KFC will be introducing three new menu items, including a new Ultimate BBQ Crispy Chicken Sandwich topped with hickory bacon, KFC’s honey BBQ sauce, fried onions, melted cheese, and pickles in between a brioche bun. Along with the new sandwich, KFC will be launching a refreshing new beverage – Blackberry Lemonade. A value box will be added to the menu as well that features 12 pieces of Kentucky Fried Chicken Nuggets, four pieces of chicken, Secret Recipe Fries, four biscuits, and a choice of four dipping sauces – all for $20. Well known for its performance-based applications, Muscle Milk has continued to have a large presence in the health and wellness industry. Today, the brand is finding new outlets for its products beyond dedicated gym goers who add this protein powder to pre-workout shakes.
